Mocha and a Croissant

The Akron Zoo in Ohio, United states of America installed the first Big Hanna composter to be used at any zoo or aquarium in the world earlier this spring. The Big Hanna will make it possible for the Akron Zoo to divert 47 tons of organic waste away from landfills.
“It represents a great example of the sustainable practices happening in our community and is a clear demonstration of our conservation mission in action,”
Doug Piekarz

president and CEO, the Akron Zoo

On April 23:rd this spring there was an inauguration of this exiting project at the Akron Zoo. The Big Hanna is installed in a newly built building that holds a skylight for natural daylight and a passive solar wall to help heat the building in winter and lower the temperatures in the summer.
The Ohio EPA and Summit ReWorks worked together with the Zoo to help fund and plan the project and now they can start compost. In the composter Akron Zoo will mix food waste and animal waste generated at the Zoo together with absorbent material like wood shavings, shredded straw and sawdust. The finished compost will be used on the Akron Zoo premises for soil amendment in flowerbeds.

Susteco AB is proud to be a part of Akron Zoo Green initiatives. On Akron zoo’s website they write about how they implement green practices in their work and what they have accomplished so far.

“We believe that being “green” is a process of decision making at all levels of the organization; it is not a destination that we will ever arrive at. Sustainability requires constant adjustment, change, and improvement as new opportunities, practices or technologies are developed. We began our journey two decades ago with the formation of our Green Team. Since that time we have achieved many successes and work to continuously expand our sustainability efforts in a myriad of ways.”

Big Hanna at Tigaiga Hotel

Pressrelease from our distributors BERCA BRAND and BERCA INSULAR

The European Union’s Waste Framework Directive (DMR) highlights the European Union’s circular economy strategy, focused on efficiently using available resources, in a way that imposes on member states the need to take measures to promote prevention, the reuse of the products and the activities of preparation for the reuse and recycling, guaranteeing the fulfillment of a series of clearly defined objectives. What they will have to incorporate into their plans and programs to achieve the already famous 2020 goals.
To achieve percentages of reduction and recovery of materials, the adoption of actions on biowaste is essential, since it constitutes the largest fraction in the waste sent to landfill in Spain. The Spain law promotes measures taken to separate biological waste and treat it in compost or biogas plants, in particular the vegetable fraction. Especially for the large generators of the bio-waste and the bio-waste generated in homes, composted in domestic and community units/plants. Hotel Tigaiga in Puerto de la Cruz decided to take their own actions and installed a Big Hanna model T60-40LS at their establishment and gets in this way an equipment for composting based of the latest technology, a model of produced by Susteco AB located in Gothenburg, Sweden. The Hotel makes a separate collection of the biowaste and processes it in their own composting equipment, allowing considerable savings in terms of waste collection fees and transport, which translates into significant savings in natural resources and CO2 emissions. This installation has recently received the visit of Cecilia Ek, the Director of Susteco AB, who is the manufacturer of the Big Hanna and a team of the the company of the distributors of Big Hanna in Spain, BERCA BRAND and BERCA INSULAR. At the visit they installed the unit and held a training for the hotel personal in correct operation.
